One to Watch: Joncquil De Vries

Artist with painting

Joncquil de Vries is a graduate of the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten St. Joost and is based in The Hague, in the Netherlands.

Inspired by Rembrandt’s treatment of atmosphere, color, and the play between shadow and light, he combines figurative and abstract images in his artworks, often depicting familiar imagery, such as animals and clowns, but rendering them strange and disorienting.

His masterful creations, evoking dreams, memories, and hallucinations, have been exhibited in many solo and group shows in the Netherlands. He was featured in February 2014 at Art Rotterdam and continues to garner attention from collectors and critics.

  6. Bill Bodge says:

Looks like it is done on a film in a subtractive manner. Like painted from an old Joel Peter Witkin photo mixed with fairy tale imagery

  7. Great works. Dark and hazy atmospheres.
