One to Watch: Tracy Sweeney

Tracy Sweeney

Tracy Sweeney has a First Class BA Hons degree in Fine Art from GMIT, Galway, Ireland and has won awards from the Pollock Krasner Foundation, New York, and from Culture Ireland for her exhibition ‘Station/Wall’ in Stockholm, Sweden.

She says that in order to build the layers in her paintings she had to, “abandon brushes and begin using carpenter’s tools, scrapers, chisels, grout, and floor brushes.”  The creation of each painting involves assembling surfaces layer by layer, then dismantling them, creating planes of unintended color and relationships between shapes in each work.

“My paintings,” she says, “have taken on their own abstract expressionistic language. All rules are broken. This frustration, excitement and challenge are integral to each of my compositions.”

Oddly, I just came upon your portfolio the other day and loved it. I wondered why Saatchi had not featured you yet and then, here you are! Beautiful work–gorgeous texture and color. Congrats on the feature.

  4. I love “Lonely in Paris.” —The streets of Paris are like
    Notes on a piano
    Like paints on a palette
    Like teeth in a smile

    The sun in Paris
    Is like a shy girl
    Singing
    Like a stripper
    Stepping
    Through the clouds

    The air in Paris
    Is like the soul
    Of a poem
    Like a painting
    You can enter
    Like a day
    Full of life

    The joy in Paris
    Is like a balloon
    Rising
    Like a tango
    Turning
    Like money falling
    From the sky

    The sadness in Paris
    Is like a blues
    Dying
    Like a love
    Ending
    Like the earth
    Stopping
    Like the angels
    Losing
    All their faith
